Dis-Orientation Week Committee Call Out!
OPIRG Brock volunteers are striking a committee to start planning for Dis-Orientation Week at Brock this year! If you’ve got ideas we’d love to hear them. Please contact opirgbu@gmail.com to get involved!
Food Not Bombs - Niagara serves every Sunday from 3-5pm in Montebello Park.
If you would like to help, please email foodnotbombsniagara@gmail.com about the following:
Food pick-up: Saturdays at 2/2:30pm at the market and other local businesses (2 volunteers needed/once or twice a month)
Cooking: Sundays at 12-2:45 at 10 Bellevue (volunteers needed, you need not come out every week, but we appreciate a heads-up)
Serving: Sundays at 3-5pm at Montebello (we are currently not in dire need of volunteers for serving, but all are welcome, especially those willing to wash a few dishes)
Clean-up: Sundays 5:30-6pm at 10 Bellevue (2 volunteers needed whenever possible, a notice of when you're planning on helping out would be appreciated)
Outreach: help w/ posters, flyers, zines, information; help w/ media (notices in BrockPress, perhaps classified?, rants in the view; help with the webpage, email, or fb site, etc.)
Inventory: We are in need of a bike cart.

Three Day French FreeSkool Workshop
Monday-Wednesday, 1-3pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer Street
This Introductory French Course presents French expressions from standard French as well as ones from Quebec and other parts of Canada; it includes grammar lessons that provide the student with the knowledge needed to use the different parts of speech correctly. There are lessons on the varying pronunciations of French words and on anclicisms (literal French translations of English expressions) in French, for which the proper French translation will be provided to the student.
I Just Spilled the Ink: An Art Show
Monday July 11, 8-10pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer Street
New local artist Peter Coady presents "I Just Spilled the Ink: An Art Show" which explores the arts through nature photography, flora and fauna origami, and motivational calligraphy. All pieces are for sale by donation, with 10% of all sales going toward the Sustain the InfoShop Campaign.
Free! Documentary Screening: BBC Dispatches: Children of Gaza
Tuesday July 12, 8 pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer St.
BBC Dispatches: Children of Gaza follows the lives of 3 Palestinian kids in the aftermath of an Israeli rocket attack that killed 1,300 people, many of which were children.
To help raise funds for the OPIRG InfoShop, we have gourmet vegan pizza and donuts available for sale each Tuesday! Local Summer Street shops Bella Noella's and Rise Above Bakery will be supplying the food for us, and all proceeds will go towards keeping the InfoShop running.
Clothing Swap!
Friday July 15, 6-9pm, 24 James Street (upstairs), St. Catharines
Come swap the clothes that you don't wear anymore, don't fit, or aren't the right colour... and get stuff you want! Just like shopping but free and the environmentally conscious thing to do. Small household items (like CDs, books, pots and pans, tchachkas, old stereos, paintbrushes, balloons, and other things that are in your way) can also be swapped. The leftovers either go home with you or will be donated to Community Care which gives out things to those in need for free. This is a family friendly event, so feel free to bring your kids or your grandma.

ART Opening: The Art of Breaking Boundaries
Friday July 15, 8-10pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop , 10 Summer St.
Since January the Art of Breaking Boundaries FreeSkool class has been meeting in the OPIRG InfoShop, on a clandestine alley in the downtown of St Catharines. We are artists, lovers of art, collaborators, brainstormers, and creative thinkers with a political kick! We believe in art as a medium for progressive social change and so with silk screens, button makers, brushes, and collage we worked together to express ourselves and bedazzle the growing alternative community in St Catharines!
Come celebrate our semester of creation July 8th at the OPIRG InfoShop!

We Saved the InfoShop!!!
Dearest OPIRG-Brock supporters,
We sincerely hope that this message finds you well and enjoying these warm and sun filled days of summer.
The OPIRG-Brock staff and Board of Directors write to you today with heartfelt gratitude and great news. Through your generosity, support and collective/collaborative action, our downtown InfoShop has been saved! The Save The InfoShop campaign, which launched in mid-May, was a huge success and we raised more than $10,000 in just six weeks in order to meet our July 1 deadline!
As a result of this tremendous community effort, we are now able to keep the crucial social justice and eco/politically-conscious programming that we provide in our downtown core. Your contributions directly help to make our local communities and wider world a better place for ALL.
Know that you have played a vital role in supporting migrant workers, free education, sustainable transportation options, local art generation, community gardens, and feeding the hungry… just to name a few. You have helped to make our community more vibrant and inclusive. And for that, we sincerely thank YOU!
Fundraising will be a big part of the year ahead for us as we continue to strive to make the InfoShop a sustainable community space. An annual fundraising plan is in the works and we are always working towards striking an ideal balance between keeping our services accessible to all, and raising enough funds to sustain the InfoShop.
We also have an announcement! We have been able to secure a new storefront with street front exposure at 21 King Street in downtown St. Catharines. With more pedestrian traffic, the hope is that even more students and community members will get involved with the all the good work that happens at the OPIRG InfoShop. We’ll be relocating to our new home this fall, and a Grand Opening celebration is being planned. So stay tuned for more information in upcoming newsletters.
Again, thanks to all the OPIRG-Brock supporters who helped out with our InfoShop campaign. A huge collective pat on the back is in order! We hope that everyone enjoys the summer months ahead and we look forward to another stellar year at OPIRG-Brock and the downtown InfoShop. This upcoming year is shaping up to be our best yet!

Proud Rainbow Voices
Ontario Network for LGBTTQ Educators
You are invited to participate in the first network for LGBTTQ educators of Ontario. This is a safe, supportive inviting forum to share and discuss triumphs/challenges in addressing LGBTTTQ issues in our workplace. This network is open to all educators that self-identify as LGBTTQ and work in the Education field (e.g., Elementary, Secondary, Public, Catholic, Private, College, University, Separate, Psychologists, Counsellors, etc).
Research states that 1 in 10 identify as LGBTTQ. This means that many of our colleagues identify as LGBTTQ, we exist! However, we often feel alone and unsupported. As professionals we come across many challenges that allow us to either “stay in the closet” or allow us to shout out proudly “I am who I am”. The question of coming out to our students, colleagues, parents often goes through our minds. We wonder about our personal safety, fear of losing our job and the ramifications this may have on our colleagues, friends and family.
Proud Rainbow Voices is a unique network that will bring us together to share our knowledge and expertise. This forum will give us strategies, support and strength to help us have a “proud” voice in addressing LGBTTQ issues.
The purpose of this forum is to:
To interact and provide support with other professionals who share our common issues
To gain resources and ideas in dealing with homophobia in our workplace
To educate ourselves and the community in addressing LGBTTQ issues

KindCycle: New Bat Time, Same Bat Place
Wednesdays, 8am-1pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer Street
Starting this week KindCycle will be moving to Wednesday mornings from 9-1. Following the successful bike ride out to Virgil to deliver bikes to migrant workers we need a new batch of bikes fixed up! Spread the word far and wide to any one with an interest or passion for biking and social justice that KindCycle is the place to be!

Shrine Circus Protest
Monday July 11, 3-4pm, 6:30-7:30pm, Jack Gatecliff Arena, 16 Division Street, St. Catharines
A group of concerned citizens will be getting together to protest the Shrine Circus on Monday July 11th at 3-4 pm and again at 6:30-7:30pm at the Jack Gatecliff Arena, located on 16 Division St, St. Catharines (arena can be seen from Geneva Street just past the Hwy 406 ramp). The Shrine Circus features performing Asian elephants and ...Arabian horses who are sentenced to a lifetime of misery for our entertainment. Please join us to educate the public on why the circus is no fun for the animals. The protest is rain or shine and signs and literature will be provided, or if you prefer bring your own signs.
