research, education, and action facilitated through OPIRG Brock –
including not only students but interested community members. All
events listed occur in St. Catharines unless indicated otherwise. For a

Letter Writing Campaign: Climate Change Accountability Act
On November 16, after a surprise vote and without any debate,
unelected Conservative senators killed the Climate Change Accountability
Act.
The Act would have made government accountable for putting in place
the solutions to reduce global warming emissions to safe levels – in
line with targets that leading scientists say are necessary to avoid the
devastating consequences of uncontrolled climate change.
It was overwhelmingly supported by and passed in the elected House of Commons, thanks in part to the support of Canadians from across the country. This decision by Conservative senators to avoid debate and call a snap vote shows disrespect for our democracy and for Canadians, who time and again have told our elected representatives that we want the federal government to act on the most serious threat facing our country and the world.
Please call or write the Prime Minister and your Member of Parliament to let them know that we expect them to live up to their responsibility to be accountable to the will of Canadians and our democracy. Call for Artwork: information for artists and entry form
The Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine & Performing Arts is teaming
up with OPIRG-Brock to host a unique and exciting art sale. This event
takes place December 10, 2010, and will be held simultaneously at two
locations in downtown St. Catharines: Pan Café and the OPIRG InfoShop.
Starting at 7:30 pm, there will be food, drinks, performances and, of
course, art for sale! Together we will be holding a silent auction of
original artwork made by faculty, staff, students, community members and
alumni from the Department of Visual Arts at Brock. Please consider
contributing artwork to this event! This is a terrific opportunity for
members of the community to see and buy your work.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund scholarships in the
Department of Visual Arts as well as to fund programs organized through
the OPIRG InfoShop in downtown St. Catharines.
Artists submitting work will have a choice of how they will be
compensated. They may choose to have a tax receipt issued for the full
value of their work (100% of the sale price will go to fund Visual Arts
scholarships) or they may choose to receive 50% of the sale price (with
the other 50% going towards OPIRG programs).
We are accepting works of any media. All works must be framed and / or
fully stable and ready to hang on a wall or stand on a surface. Works
must be ready to be carried away by a successful bidder. Keep in mind
that smaller works allow us more flexibility in hanging in either venue
and may encourage purchase. We cannot store artworks after the sale is
over, nor can we deliver work. Works that do not sell will be kept for
pickup, by arrangement.

used for displaying the work and processing the donation after the
event:

Amnesty International: Holiday Wishes of Peace
Monday November 29 – Wednesday December 1, 10-3 pm, Mackenzie Chown Block A
San Jose de Apartado is a community in Colombia that has chosen to be
independent of the ongoing civil war. Trapped between FARC and ELN
guerillas and both government forces and government militias, the peace
community of San Jose de Apartado has become a symbol of independence
and peace. Over this week we will send postcards of support to the
community members that face continued violence from all sides of the
conflict.
Brock Animal Rights Club 6th Annual Holiday Food/Toy Drive and Vegan Bake Sale
Tuesday November 30 and Wednesday December 1, 11-3 pm, Brock University, Mackenzie Chown Block A
The holidays are a time to reflect on our own privileges and in doing
so be inspired to help others in need- both humans and non-human
animals. BARC will be collecting food/toys for homeless animals in
Niagara (e.g., cat/ kitten canned/dry food, dog canned/dry food, kitty
litter, cat/dog toys, dog collars, small animal food, etc). We are also
collecting non-perishable vegan food items for community care (canned
veggies, beans, pasta, etc.) Please help us make a difference by
bringing in your food and/or toy donation.
On the second day of the food/toy drive BARC will be having a holiday
vegan bake sale. Proceeds will be donated to Storybook Farm Primate

Free! Documentary Screening: TED Talk Selections: AIDS Awareness
Tuesday November 30, 8 pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer St.
Come down to the InfoShop for riveting film and delicious popcorn and refreshments. Film to be followed by discussion.
TED is a global series of conferences that feature experts making
short presentations on a wide range of topics within the research and
practice of science and culture. Many of these talks have been made
available for free though www.ted.com.
To coincide with AIDS Awareness Week, we've selected some TED Talks on
the issue of HIV/AIDS. As usual we'll be screening a few talks,
interspersed with discussions on the issues raised in the talks.
Aids Awareness Movie Night
Free! Documentary Screening: Sea In The Blood; Sadness
Wednesday December 1, 7-9 pm, Taro Hall 307
Sea In The Blood is a personal documentary about living with illness,
tracing the relationship of the artist to thalassemia in his sister Nan,
and AIDS in his partner Tim. At the core of the piece are two trips.
The first is in 1962, when Richard went from Trinidad to England with
Nan to see a famous hematologist interested in her unusual case. The
second is in 1977 when Richard and Tim made the counterculture
pilgrimage from Europe to Asia. The relationship with Tim blossomed, but
Nan died before their return. The narrative of love and loss is set
against a background of colonialism in the Caribbean and the
reverberations of migration and political change.
Sadness: Award-winning photographer William Yang explores issues of
grief, family and identity in this adaptation of his acclaimed stage
performance, Sadness. Through this mesmerizing, poetic montage of story
telling, photography and stylized re-enactment, William brings to life
the stories of his family and friends. Sadness has two themes; the first
involves an exploration of William’s Chinese-Australian identity and
family history, while the second centers on his experience of loss
during the AIDS epidemic.

United Nations Climate Change Conference, Cancun, Mexico

Climate change is a crucial environmental issue. The United Nations
Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 29 November
to 10 December 2010, encompasses the sixteenth Conference of the
Parties (COP) and the sixth Conference of the Parties serving as the
meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP), as well as the
thirty-third sessions of both the Subsidiary Body for Implementation
(SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice
(SBSTA), and the fifteenth session of the AWG-KP and thirteenth session
of the AWG-LCA. Stop by the information table to learn more about
climate change issues and what you can do.
Niagara Community Gardens Network (NCGN) Meet and Greet
Thursday December 2nd, 7pm, Centennial Public Library, 54 Church Street, St. Catharines
Climate Action Niagara is pleased to host a Niagara Community Gardens
Network (NCGN) Meet and Greet. We will be discussing issues relating to
food security, gardening, regional networking, nutritious food for
families, neighbourhood rejuvenation, plus community garden
opportunities across Niagara – highlighting both the benefits and

War Resisters Event

Join us at the Niagara Artists Centre for a short film followed by
speakers Ashlea Brockway and Malcolm Allen, MP. Ashlea and her husband
Jeremy sought refuge in Canada with their family after Jeremy refused to
return to fight in Iraq.

This Friday the Niagara Action for Animals will be hosting their
monthly potluck. Out of respect for all animals, food brought to the
potluck must be vegan - meaning free of meat (including fish &
chicken) and other animal products such as dairy, eggs and honey. Vegan
food dishes serving 8-10 people, vegan baked goods or fruit trays are
appreciated. If you don't know what to make, non-alcoholic beverages
such as flavoured soy milk, juice, etc. will do just fine. Out of
respect for the environment, non-disposable cutlery, plates, and napkins
will be provided and at the request of the Church, bottled water is
prohibited.
A friendly reminder that NAfA accepts non-perishable vegan food
items at each potluck that are donated to Community Care; the local food
bank. Also, this year we will be much more vigilant for those with
allergies and sensitivities, (peanut, soy, gluten, etc.). So please be
diligent and mark your recipes and ingredients accordingly. Those with
allergies and sensitivities will be very happy!
