Volunteer Opportunities!

 

Organics on Campus Initiative

 

We are looking to launch an organics on campus initiative.  The aim is to show that there is interest in having bins for organic waste available for use on campus.  Sending compostable organic waste to landfill unnecessarily increases the amount of waste we are creating – concerned students can email opirgbu@gmail.com to get involved.

Public Discussion: Cell Phones and Electromagnetic Fields - The Science and Controversy

Monday November 22, 1-2 pm, Brock University, Academic South, Room 203

 

Dr. Davis was the Founding Director of the Centre for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and was Professor of Epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health (2004-2009). She has been a fellow of both the American Colleges of Toxicology and of Epidemiology, as was part of the team awarded the Nobel Prize with Al Gore for work on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007. She is the author of more than 190 publications in books and in journals including the Lancet and the Journal of the American Medical Association.  Presented by the Department of Community Health Sciences and Brock Health, and co-sponsored by the Breast Cancer Prevention and Community Research Group.

This is a significant issue for the Brock community as we have extensive telecommunications infrastructure on the roof of the Schmon Tower.Recent studies published by the National Research Council Press in Ottawa advise that cell towers should be placed at least 450 meters from places of residence. We have many students living within 450 meters of the Schmon Tower. 

 

Free! Documentary Screening: Moon Bear Rescue

Animals Asia Foundation will be coming to campus! They will be hosting free screenings of their new documentary Moon Bear Rescue.  Animals Asia is a Hong Kong based charity that works to end the cruel bear bile industry and provides sanctuary and rehabilitation for rescued bears. Free! Documentary Screening: Middle Sexes – Redefining He and She

Tuesday November 23, 8 pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer St.

 

Come down to the InfoShop for riveting film and delicious popcorn and refreshments.  Film to be followed by discussion.

 

We received some great feedback on our screening of Red Without Blue in September, which examined transgender issues.  As a follow up, we've selected another documentary on transgender issues, to coincide with the Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20th.  The latest documentary by award-winning filmmaker Antony Thomas (HBO's Celibacy), Middle Sexes: Redefining He and She, sensitively explores the controversial subject of the blurring of gender as well as the serious social and family problems - even dangers - often faced by those whose gender may fall somewhere in between male and female. Narrated by noted author Gore Vidal and filmed in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America, Middle Sexes examines the ways different societies and cultures handle the blurring of gender, sexual identity and sexual orientation. Through interviews with transgender, intersexual and bisexual men and women, as well as experts from the scientific and academic communities, the film considers the entire spectrum of sexual behavior, personal identity and lifestyles among people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Public Lecture: Tom Rand will be presenting Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit - 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World

Thursday November 25, 7pm, Niagara College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake campus in the Yerich Auditorium

 

Tom recently completed a book entitled Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save our World.  While our addiction to fossil fuels is deeply embedded in both our energy infrastructure and psychology Tom believes it is a habit that we can kick. Speaking as a venture capitalist, philosopher and an engineer, Tom speaks to how existing technologies are sufficient to significantly displace, even replace, fossil fuels. The book describes ten technologies including solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, hydropower, ocean, smart buildings, transportation, efficiency and conservation and the energy internet.  After the presentation join us at the Armoury from 8 p.m.-10 p.m. for Niagara College’s first student run Green Drinks event. Experiential Explosion, Brock Rec 4Q96 Teaching Experiential Education through Experiential Education

Saturday November 27, 9:30 am, St. Catharines Public Library

Buy Nothing Day

Friday November 26 and Saturday November 27

 

This weekend participate in Buy Nothing Day on November 26^th for National Buy Nothing Day and/or November 27^th for International Buy Nothing Day.  It is a day of protest against consumerism.  Everything we buy has an impact on the environment; Buy Nothing Day highlights the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. Developed countries consume a disproportionate amount of the earth's natural resources and cause a disproportionate level of environmental damage.  Take a day or two to curb consumption and question the difference between needs and wants.
