Volunteer Opportunities!
Calling all artists!
OPIRG has paired up with the Agricultural Workers Center in Virgil for their Open House. It is a time to welcome back returning migrant workers and to extend a welcome to first time workers!
We will be needing artists to collaborate in creating a very large banner to specifically represent female migrant workers in the Niagara region!
If you are interested in making art and learning more about the migrant worker community get in touch by emailing opirgbu@gmail.com!
OPIRG InfoShop Community Garage Sale! Items needed to sell!
Are you just starting your Spring cleaning? Do you have un-needed goods cluttering your space? Consider donating them to the OPIRG InfoShop Community Garage Sale! This will be a fundraising event to keep the InfoShop, an important resource for social justice and environmental initiatives, in our downtown core!

Food Not Bombs Volunteers Needed for Saturday afternoons and Sundays
Food Not Bombs - Niagara is starting up again after our winter hibernation! Food servings will be happening every Sunday in Montebello Park. If you would like to help, please contact us about the following. (Or you could just show up; but letting us know is always helpful.):
Food pick-up: Saturdays at 2pm at the market (2 volunteers needed/week)
Cooking: Sundays at 12-2:30 at 10 Bellevue (3 + volunteers needed/week)
Serving: Sundays at 2:45-5pm at Montebello (3 + volunteers needed/week)
Clean-up: Sundays 5:30-6pm at 10 Bellevue (2 volunteers needed/week)
Outreach: help w/ posters (there are some currently at the OPIRG InfoShop at 10 Summer Street), flyers, zines, information, help w/ media (notices in BrockPress, perhaps classifieds?, rants in the view, help with the webpage, email, or fb site, etc.)
Inventory: We are always in need of basic food items to help spruce up donations. Contact us to help.

Free! Documentary Screening: PBS Frontline: The Merchants of Cool

The Merchants of Cool is an in-depth look at how corporations use market researchers to track teen trends and profit from it.
To help raise funds for the OPIRG InfoShop, we have gourmet vegan pizza and donuts available for sale each Tuesday! Local Summer Street shops Bella Noella's and Rise Above Bakery will be supplying the food for us, and all proceeds will go towards keeping the InfoShop running.

2 Environmental Art Shows just steps apart!
Art Show Opening: “Anywhere but Here” by Lindsay LeBlanc

In “Anywhere but Here” local artist Lindsay LeBlanc has generated a body of work that draws attention to the trees that inhabit our region, and highlights connections between us and the landscape. Following the opening the show runs the month of June; please stop in between 2-6pm from Monday to Friday.
Art Show Opening: “Glassterpieces and other Eco-Adventures” by Lisa Kretz, with Music By Jaimie Godard!

What happens when an environmentalist, who is also a painter, faces up to the guilt of smearing plastic (in the form of acrylic paint) on canvases for her art practice? In this case, a series of mosaics composed out of beach glass and found objects, with themes of trees, shells, and flying creatures. There is also a magic bird cane. The show will be up for the remainder of the month of June.
At the opening you are in for a real treat - local musician Jaimie Godard will amaze you with the way he weaves lyricism, musicality, and the good fight against oppression. Musical performance to start at 8:30!
Niagara Action for Animals (NAFA) Vegan Potluck

SPECIAL: Please remember to bring a food donation as our donation program will now be cycled through a vegan food serving program at The RAFT! We will accept any non perishable vegan food items, but we are especially keen on the following: Chocolate Almond Breeze, Rice Krispies and Chocolate Chips.
Out of respect for all animals, food brought to the potluck must be VEGAN - meaning free of meat (including fish & chicken) and other animal products such as dairy, eggs and honey. Vegan food dishes serving 8-10 people, vegan baked goods or fruit trays are appreciated. If you don't know what to bring or make, non-alcoholic beverages such as flavoured soy milk, juice, etc. will do just fine. Out of respect for the environment, non-disposable cutlery, plates, and napkins will be provided and at the request of the Church, bottled water is prohibited.
Also, we will be much more vigilant for those with allergies and sensitivities, (peanut, soy, gluten, etc.). So please be diligent and mark your recipes and ingredients accordingly. Those with allergies and sensitivities will be very happy!

This course is for anyone who has to explain Shakespeare, to themselves or to teach others.
Focusing on the available texts and commentaries, this course will examine the current prejudices of the high school (and in some cases the University) classroom with a close reading of Macbeth as our guide. Participants will build a bibliography of important Shakespeare criticism and enact a different measure of English literature than what is commonly required. A radical reinterpretation of the play will test our ability to read Shakespeare in the present age.
Become part of an art project to commemorate Chinese Railway Workers in Canada!
Rocky Railway High (Closure) is an interactive art project for commemoration of Chinese Railway Workers in Canada.
Our goal is to collect 5,000 “expressions” (drawings or writings) from
the public to represent the symbolic return of Chinese railway workers
who lost their lives during the construction of the Canadian Pacific
Railway. The work will be collected, exhibited, and brought to the
province of Guangdong for permanent burial.
Over the month of July 2011, David Cheung, a contemporary artist and
his two sons who are descendants of a railway worker, will travel by
train and by bicycle along the section of the railway constructed by the
Chinese workers. They will research and gather information about the
railway workers and their families for the project.
The trip will begin in Revelstoke, British Columbia and end at a
cemetery where some of the Chinese railway workers were buried in
Victoria. During this journey, text journals, video clips, and images of
on-site artworks will be uploaded to our blog
(http://rockyrailwayhigh.blog.com/). The 5000+ pieces of collected
artwork and writing will be compiled and exhibited in British Columbia in
October 2011 along with a series of multimedia artwork created by the
artist. After the exhibition in Canada is completed, all contributions
from the public will be shipped to Guangdong Province, China in
December 2011 to be buried in a permanent site, representing the
symbolic homecoming of the 5000 Chinese railway workers who
perished in helping build this nation.
