People from all walks of life are invited to participate in the research, education, and action facilitated through OPIRG Brock – including not only students but interested community members. Volunteer Opportunities!
Food Not Bombs Volunteers Needed for Saturday afternoons and Sundays
Food Not Bombs - Niagara is starting up again after our winter hibernation! Food servings will be happening every Sunday in Montebello Park. If you would like to help, please contact us about the following. (Or you could just show up; but letting us know is always helpful.):
Food pick-up: Saturdays at 2pm at the market (2 volunteers needed/week)
Cooking: Sundays at 12-2:30 at 10 Bellevue (3 + volunteers needed/week)
Serving: Sundays at 2:45-5pm at Montebello (3 + volunteers needed/week)
Clean-up: Sundays 5:30-6pm at 10 Bellevue (2 volunteers needed/week)
Outreach: help w/ posters (there are some currently at the OPIRG InfoShop at 10 Summer Street), flyers, zines, information, help w/ media (notices in BrockPress, perhaps classifieds?, rants in the view, help with the webpage, email, or fb site, etc.)
Inventory: We are always in need of basic food items to help spruce up donations. Contact us to help.

Free! Documentary Screening: Skipping Waste

Skipping Waste is a documentary that gives you a glimpse into the lives of Europeans who dumpster dive for ethical reasons. It features dumpster diving footage from France and the Netherlands. Skipping Waste takes the five second rule to a whole new level! Waste not want not.
To help raise funds for the OPIRG InfoShop, we have gourmet vegan pizza and donuts available for sale each Tuesday! Local Summer Street shops Bella Noella's and Rise Above Bakery will be supplying the food for us, and all proceeds will go towards keeping the InfoShop running.
Kind Cycle Project: Same Day, Different Time
Thursdays, 1-8 pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer St.
A fantastic program is run through the InfoShop for anyone needing bike repairs (especially those who can't afford such things) on Thursdays from 1-8pm. The Kind Cycle project is free to those in need, and by donation if possible. If you are interested in learning how to fix bikes, and want to help out with this project, please stop by at the InfoShop between 1-8 pm on Thursdays or email opirgbu@gmail.com for more information. We also have some refurbished retro bikes for sale to help cover overhead costs.

Building on the momentum from last week’s film screening of You Never Bike alone - which chronicles the rise of the Critical Mass bicycle movement - we are hosting a planning meeting for all the folks who contacted us to say they want to be active in Critical Mass right here in the Niagara Region. Looking forward to meeting everyone and planning the next Critical Mass ride!
Beginners Guitar Class beginning with Instructor Jaimie Godard!
Friday May 13, 7-8 pm, OPIRG Brock InfoShop, 10 Summer St.
Locally renowned musician Jaimie Godard will be teaching beginners Guitar classes all Fridays of the month except for the first one of the month. (This way you are all free to go to the Art Show openings hosted at the InfoShop and the NAfA potlucks that happen on the first Friday of the month!) This Friday is the first lesson!
Class Description:
This class is geared towards teaching the very basics of playing the guitar. My goal is to help students develop the skills necessary to eventually be able to teach themselves by practicing and learning songs. You do not need any knowledge of music theory or how to play guitar to take part in this class. You just need a guitar! I can also offer help getting started with bass, keys, or ukulele if anyone is interested.

Newest InfoShop Summer Hours…
Monday-Wednesday 2-8, Thursday 12-6, Friday 2-6
We are still learning the best times for all to visit the InfoShop, so starting May 9th we will be changing our hours a little. From now on we’ll be open from 2-8 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Thursdays we will be open from 12-6 and Fridays from 2-6. Of course, there will be additional programming as well like our regular Tuesday night Documentary Film Series and the new FreeSkool classes that are on their way or already here!

A Request from Niagara Action for Animals...
Niagara Action for Animals is calling on you to speak up for animals used and abused in the circus industry. We regret to inform you that the Shrine Circus will be returning to Saint Catharines on July 11th for 2 performances (4 and 7:30pm) at the Jack Gatecliff Arena (16 Division St). The Shrine Circus features performing Asian elephants and Arabian horses who are sentenced to a lifetime of misery for our entertainment.
Please take a few minutes to write a letter of concern to City Council and the St. Catharines Shriners (contact information is attached and pasted below). Letters to the editor are also encouraged closer to the date. Please also stay tuned for details on our annual public demonstration/ protest.
We need to unite and let people know that performing animal circus acts are cruel, outdated, and unsafe and that there are plenty of animal-free circus alternatives. Personalized letters are preferred - for your convenience, please see attached (Shrine Circus Issues and Zoocheck brochure) for some major points that can be addressed in your letters.
